Ledbury, Herefordshire

A beautiful property in Herefordshire sat elevated from its surrounding pastureland. The garden encompasses the property and although not large, its connection to the surrounding landscape is vast and uninterrupted.

A Mulberry sits within an open lawn as you approach the property, providing an air of tradition and quality that sets the tone before you wander beneath the pleached Crab Apples and up the steps to the entrance of the home. The front garden is loosely based on a traditional Knott garden, less structured and more informal in its appearance with organically clipped hedging providing the framework that shapes the walking routes and seating areas. Scented planting allowed to self seed freely will occupy the spaces less travelled. The pleached Crab Apples provide a different atmosphere from this elevated position, connecting with the trees and shrubs found throughout this space and providing an informal boundary to the terrace . A cobbled courtyard beside the house has been kept minimal, bordered simply by wide Yew hedges it becomes a sheltered and inviting space that sits cool beneath the canopy of trees.

At the back of the property the garden becomes more rustic in appearance with drystone walls creating the framework that divides the space, softened by plants that in part conceal their appearance. A pool has been positioned close to the Haha to take advantage of the field views, with planting positioned in close proximity to allow for a more natural atmosphere. Cobbles and gravel make up the lower terrace where a large dining table sits amongst drought tolerant planting, informalising the space and infusing the air with fragrance.
