Our approach is rooted in context. Every landscape emerges from a careful reading of site, history and sense of place. We believe the strongest gardens are born where these influences converge, not from a singular imposed vision but through a considered balance of architecture and landscape, hard and soft, structure and spontaneity. The results are gardens that feel natural, enduring and deeply connected to both people and place.
Our work combines an artistic sensibility with pragmatic attention to detail. An interplay between free form and logical thinking. For us gardens hold an introspective quality. They are spaces rich in tone, contrast and atmosphere, shaped as much by emotion, as by the design itself, and to experience a garden is to be immersed in its identity.
A garden must exist in balance, which is what excites us most: the act of creating, connecting and collaborating not only with the immediate surroundings but with the wider landscape, designers and craftspeople. Something far larger than the garden itself.
For the past eight years, we have both been working on Harry’s garden. This ongoing process of making and tending has shaped a deeper understanding of what a garden can be. It is a practice grounded in connection. There is a continual dialogue between designer and gardener, between drawing and making, between the certainty of the studio and the intimate unpredictability of hands-on work in the garden.
Gardens evolve and mature, they are shaped by time. To design with this understanding is to create a garden that is in harmony with its setting, part of the landscape rather than apart from it. Gardening continues to deepen our practice, refine our thinking and ground our work.

After initial conversations we will visit the site to explore the land and discuss initial ideas, thoughts and directions for the project. Close attention is given to the personal use and function of the space, to existing site conditions such as exposure and light, materiality and vegetation, circulation and views and geology and history. All aspects combining to build the foundations of a well thought out space.
Back in the studio we will write up a design brief based on our conversations and once agreed we will provide a design fee based on the work outlined. A process letter will be provided, clearly showing the breakdown of work and payments throughout the various design stages.
On the completion of the site analysis we will begin the concept design, developing a schematic masterplan accompanied with visuals and picture references. Through this process we work closely with yourselves to ensure your ambitions for the garden are realised.
processAfter the concept design stage has been signed off we move onto the detailed design, developing initial works into a complete tender package involving all drawings and details required by the contractor to provide a quote of works and to later build from. If required we can coordinate the sourcing and appointment of a contractor.
Throughout construction we will be in regular communication with the build team and at agreed stages will visit site to review progress. Prior to planting Harry and David will layout all plants on site.
Post completion we offer establishment visits over the following years to ensure the garden is developing well and maintained to a high standard.
