Brecon, Powys

A public garden for Brecon Museum, Library and Art Centre. Captains Walk Gardens are an abstract reflection of the Brecon Beacons National Park. A fragment of the local Welsh landscape brought into the heart of town, helping to reconnect, educate and improve people’s understanding of their local landscape. The design is a thoughtful response to the site’s ‘sense of place’, understanding the immediate context and wider natural surroundings provides the gardens with an inherent connection to the landscape, the architecture and the requirements of the individual users. The project takes a minimalist and ecological approach with low impact and considerably improved social value provided through a flexible and dynamic design. The garden is divided into five separate areas, each with individual characters and uses that tie in with the functions of the architecture. Providing areas to dine, enjoying the produce from the cafe, to appreciate art and sculpture, to sit amongst trees and plants, to relax on the lawns and read and to wander through the park, to and from the buildings.
